March 20, 2008. THE ARRIVAL
We finally arrived to India, after a long 48 hour trip from Spain via London and Dubai. The first
thing we did at the airport, was to exchange money, and once that was done, Bishnu was
waiting for us outside and took us to his house. There we meet his lovely wife, who kindly
offered us some tea and french toasts. However, after such a long flight, all we wanted to do
was sleep. Around 3:30 we took the train to Santiniketan. The experience was amazing. The
train was packed of people who were going to Santiniketan for the 'Holli' Festival.
Once we arrived to Santiniketan, Krishna was waiting for us with the car and took us to the
apartment. There we had a very tasty dinner and then went to sleep, because we had to get
prepared for the 'Holli' Festival on the next day.
March 21st, 2008 "THE HOLLI FESTIVAL"
I encourage all volunteers to attend (if you can) to next years Holly Festival. Its a national
Indian holiday, which is specially traditional in Santiniketan. This is a festival to celebrate the
arrival of Spring and the end of Winter. Its such a colorful, musical and happy festival, that is
worth experiencing. Every person is given a pack of color sand, which you put on peoples
face. At the festival there were a couple of Bauls, who are the typical folk Bengali singers
only found in West Bengal. So by the end of the day, (as you can see on the pictures) we were
all covered in a clash of color sand :) IT WAS AMAZING. After visiting Bishnu's sister, we went
back to the apartment and ate a delicious Bengali spicy meal by Shampa. That same afternoon
we visited the market (which is only opened on Saturdays) and continued to celebrate the
Holli Festival.
March 22-31, 2008 FIRST LIGHT
The school is full of lovely, energetic children, who really want to learn English. We arrive
everyday around 2:45 and leave school after sunset, at 5:45. They are very smart children,
who in just one year have learned so much, thanks to all the previous volunteers. This week, I
reviewed with them, the basics, such as the alphabet, numbers and colors, always with songs,
which they love!
